Zhang Yimou to Direct ‘The Three-Body Problem’ Film Adaptation

The project was announced by Wang Changtian, founder and CEO of Enlight Media, at a forum organized within the Shanghai International Film Festival.

Zhang Yimou (Hero, House of Flying Daggers, Full River Red) is set to direct a film adaptation of Liu Crixin’s sci-fi novel “The Three-Body Problem,” according to Variety. The project was announced by Wang Changtian, founder and CEO of Enlight Media, at a forum organized within the Shanghai International Film Festival.

“We hope that director Zhang Yimou can grasp the essence of the ‘Three-Body Problem’ novel and make some breakthroughs and innovations, and gain something in the international market,” said Wang.

The Three-Body Problem is the first book in the “Remembrance of Earth’s Past” trilogy, which explores humanity’s preparation for the arrival of a mysterious alien force. The series’ logline reads, “A young woman’s fateful decision in 1960s China reverberates across space and time into the present day. When the laws of nature inexplicably unravel before their eyes, a close-knit group of brilliant scientists join forces with an unorthodox detective to confront the greatest threat in humanity’s history.”

The novel was recently adapted into the Netflix series 3 Body Problem, showrun by Game of Thrones’ David Benioff and Dan Weiss, as well as Alexander Woo (True Blood). The project faced major controversy in late 2021, when former producer Lin Qi was fatally poisoned by Yoozoo Group senior executive Xu Yao. Yao was later sentenced to death for the poisoning.
