Josh Gad to Star in ‘Spaceballs’ Sequel from Amazon MGM Studios

Mel Brooks will return to produce the film alongside Gad; Josh Greenbaum directs from a script by Benji Samit, Dan Hernandez, and Gad.

The Schwartz is still with us it seems. A Spaceballs sequel film is currently in development with Amazon MGM Studios, according to Variety. Josh Gad (Frozen, Beauty and the Beast) will star and produce alongside franchise originator Mel Brooks. Kevin Salter executive produces.

Josh Greenbaum is set to direct from a script by Benji Samit, Dan Hernandez, and Gad. Plot details are firmly under wraps.

Spaceballs, a space opera parody of multiple sci-fi franchises including Star Wars, Alien, and Star Trek, premiered in 1987. The film starred Bill Pullman as Lone Star, John Candy as Barf, Daphne Zuniga as Princess Vespa, Rick Moranis as Lord Dark Helmet and Brooks as President Skroob and Yogurt.

While the sequel will serve as the franchise’s first live-action film in nearly 40 years, Brooks also created 2008’s Spaceballs: The Animated series and 2005’s Spaceballs: The Documentary.
