SAG-AFTRA Strike Shuts Down Multiple Productions

‘Deadpool 3,’ ‘Apples Never Fall,’ and ‘Mortal Kombat 2’ are some of the first projects affected as roughly 160,000 film and TV actors take to the picket line after negotiations fail with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.

It’s all happening quite fast! The SAG-AFTRA strike officially began Thursday of last week, and multiple projects have already ceased production. Deadpool 3, Peacock’s Apples Never Fall, and Mortal Kombat 2 are the first fatalities, with many sure to follow.

Deadpool 3 was one of the first productions to halt filming after performers headed straight to the picket line. The project had previously side-stepped the writer’s strike by requiring Ryan Reynolds to stick to the script with no improvisation.

The Screen Producers Australia (SPA) assures that Apples Never Fall and Mortal Kombat 2, which were shooting in Australia, may be among only a few projects in the country to shut down. Currently, a loophole exists through the Global Rule One Agreement which dictates that all SAG-AFTRA members must work under foreign union contracts while shooting abroad.

“SPA anticipates that a limited number of scripted ‘offshore’ (i.e. non-Australian) productions will be affected by the strike, with cast and crew stood down while the strike continues,” said the SPA in a statement.

“However, local scripted productions, produced and controlled by Australian production companies, engaging Australian and Imported SAG members, will remain unaffected by the strike order provided they engage all cast under Australian Industry Contracts in accordance with the Global Rule One Agreement between SAG-AFTRA and the Media Entertainment & Arts Alliance (MEAA).”

Other projects saved by the Global Rule One Agreement are House of the Dragon, Industry, and Dune: The Sisterhood, which are currently shooting in Europe under Equity contracts.
