Sony Drops ‘Harold and the Purple Crayon’ Trailer

Based on the classic children’s book by Crockett Johnson and starring Zachary Levi, the live-action / animated hybrid features a grown-up Harold who draws himself right off the page into the real world, where he has a lot to learn; coming to theaters in August.

Sony Pictures has shared the trailer for the upcoming live-action animated hybrid family adventure/comedy, Harold and the Purple Crayon, hitting theaters August 2. Inspired by the 1955 children's picture book written and illustrated by Crockett Johnson, the film follows adventurous Harold, played by Zachary Levi, who has brought himself out of his 2D adventures into the physical world just by drawing it.

Like the book, the adventurous Harold can make anything come to life simply by drawing it. After he grows up and draws himself off the book’s pages and into the physical world, Harold finds he has a lot to learn about real life—and that his trusty purple crayon may set off more hilarious hijinks than he thought possible. When the power of unlimited imagination falls into the wrong hands, it will take all of Harold and his friends’ creativity to save both the real world and his own. Harold and the Purple Crayon is the first film adaptation of the beloved children’s classic that has captivated young readers for decades.

Directed by Carlos Saldanha, produced by John Davis, and executive produced by Jeremy Stein and Jenny Hinkey, the film stars Levi, Lil Rel Howery, Benjamin Bottani, Jemaine Clement, Tanya Reynolds with Alfred Molina, and Zooey Deschanel. The screenplay is written by David Guion & Michael Handelman, based on the book by Johnson.

Studios contributing to the production’s visual effects include Day For Nite, Clear Angle Studios, Folks VFX, Mammal Studios, OPSIS, Rising Sun Pictures, RSP, and spin vfx.
