‘One Piece’ Anime Remake Coming to Netflix

After the success of the live-action adaptation, the streamer has teamed with franchise creator Eiichiro Oda, Shueisha, Fuji Television Network, Toei Animation Co., and WIT Studio to reboot the pirate tale following Monkey D. Luffy and his misfit crew.

From anime to live-action and… back to anime? Netflix has ordered a remake of the original One Piece anime series after the success of the recently released live-action adaptation. Manga author and franchise creator Eiichiro Oda is once again on board alongside publisher Shueisha, Fuji Television Network and Toei Animation Co. for the project, which will be completely separate from the established series by Toei Animation.

One Piece tells a legendary high-seas tale unlike any other. Monkey D. Luffy is a young adventurer who has longed for a life of freedom for as long as he can remember. Luffy sets off from his small village on a perilous journey to find the legendary fabled treasure, One Piece, to become King of the Pirates! But to find the ultimate prize, Luffy must assemble the crew he’s always wanted before finding a ship to sail, searching every inch of the vast blue seas, outpacing the Marines, and outwitting dangerous rivals at every turn.

The upcoming series The Once Piece will start from the iconic East Blue saga and cover the same material as the first anime series, and is already in production at WIT Studio (Spy x Family, Attack on Titan).

The team revealed the new project at Jump Festa 2024 on Sunday, stating it will be, “distinct from the TV anime series that has captivated audiences for over 25 years” and “provide viewers with a fresh yet familiar experience, utilizing cutting-edge visual technology to reimagine Luffy’s adventures through the beloved East Blue saga.” The manga celebrated its 25th anniversary in July 2022, having sold over 510 million comics worldwide. The TV anime series produced by Toei Animation has been broadcast since 1999.

Meanwhile, the live action One Piece series has been renewed for a second season after an extremely successful debut. For Season 1, Victor Scalise serves as production VFX supervisor; Scott Ramsey serves as VFX producer, with VFX handled by Barnstorm VFX, CoSA VFX, Eyeline Studios, Framestore, Goodbye Kansas Studios, Incessant Rain, Ingenuity Studios, NetFX, Refuge, Rising Sun Pictures, and Scanline VFX.

Another manga by Oda, created when he was only 19 years old, has also been adapted into anime for the first time. The action-packed Monsters 103 Mercies Dragon Damnation follows Ryuma, a samurai entangled in a world disrupted by an ominous force—a dragon capable of unleashing catastrophic destruction upon the land.
