CG Pioneers Paul Debevec and Donald Greenberg to Keynote VIEW 2020

Award-winning computer graphics researchers and professors are the first announced presenters at upcoming October 18-23 digital media conference in Turin, Italy.

TURIN, ITALY – According to Conference Director Dr. Maria Elena Gutierrez, two of the most highly-regarded researchers and teachers in computer graphics, Paul Debevec and Professor Donald Greenberg, will keynote the 21st annual VIEW Conference; they are the first announced conference speakers for the 2020 digital media symposium, being held October 18-23 in Turin, Italy.

“We are honored that these two brilliant pioneering researchers will bring their inspiring visions to VIEW,” Dr. Gutierrez notes. “They have opened the minds of so many people to new ways of looking at the world. They are the perfect speakers to highlight the October VIEW Conference in a revitalized Italy.”

Debevec is a senior scientist at Google VR and an adjunct research professor of computer science at USC, working within the USC Institute for Creative Technologies. He has received multiple awards for his work, which includes developing image-based modeling and lighting digital objects with real-world illumination. He has received SIGGRAPH’s first significant new researcher award, the SMPTE progress medal, and two Academy Science and Technology Awards. He is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, a fellow of the Visual Effects Society, and has served on the Executive Committee and as Vice-President of SIGGRAPH.

Dr. Greenberg is the Jacob Gould Schurman Professor of Computer Graphics at Cornell University, where he teaches computer graphics courses in Computer Science, computer-aided design in the Department of Architecture, computer animation in the Department of Art, and technology strategy in the Business School. He is the Director of the Program of Computer Graphics and was the originator and former Director of the Computer Aided Design Instructional Facility at Cornell University. Five former students have won Hollywood’s Technical “Oscars,” and five have won the prestigious SIGGRAPH Achievement Award. Dr. Greenberg’s honors include the ACM SIGGRAPH Steven A. Coons Award for Outstanding Creative Contributions to Computer Graphics, NCGA Academic Award, and the ASCA Creative Research Award in Architecture.

Dr. Gutierrez also sent this note to share with the AWN community:

We are living through difficult times, a kind of “stasis in darkness” to say it in the words of one of my favorite poets, Sylvia Plath. All over the world we are hit very hard by COVID-19, and especially hard here in northern Italy. It really seems that the coronavirus is unescapable. Many people are suffering deeply because of this terrible pandemic and our hearts go out to all of them. As we try to adjust to our new reality of social distancing and distance learning and working from home, we are relying heavily on digital communication, and we are undoubtedly being transformed by our daily use of technology. But we should remember all those for which neither distancing nor technology are available. We hope to be able to address some of these questions this coming October during VIEW Conference 2020. We are hopeful that by the end of this summer this will all be behind us and that we will be able to get together and celebrate creativity and life in general during VIEW Conference. Stay safe and hope to welcome you this coming October in beautiful Turin, Italy.

The international VIEW Conference, Italy’s premiere event for Computer Graphics, Interactive and Immersive Storytelling, Animation, Visual Effects, Games, and VR, AR, and Mixed Reality, brings top professionals from those fields to the beautiful baroque city of Torino, Italy for a week of talks, presentations, and workshops.
