‘Dan Da Dan: First Encounter’ Rolls Out Globally

Worldwide theatrical release kicks off in Asia on August 31 featuring episodes 1-3 of the highly anticipated TV series launch; an ode to genre film, B-movies, and retro sci-fi works, the show follows the story of a high school girl from a family of spirit mediums.

Mainichi Broadcasting System, Inc. in partnership with ADN, GKIDS, and MUSE, announced the global theatrical premiere outside Japan of the highly anticipated anime series Dan Da Dan beginning on August 31.

The new anime series, based on the popular manga by Yukinobu Tatsu and created by Science SARU (DEVILMAN crybaby, INU-OH, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off), is an action-packed love letter to sci-fi and horror with the heart of a ruthlessly funny teen rom-com.

The theatrical premiere, named Dan Da Dan: First Encounter includes the first three series episodes and includes interviews with Manga author and editor Tatsu and Shihei Lin, director Fuga Yamashiro, and voice actors Shion Wakayama and Natsuki Hanae.

“When making this series into an anime, I incorporated playful and visually stunning techniques unique to video to create a very fun structure for the series,” said Yamashiro. “I believe you will enjoy it in a slightly different way from the manga and I hope you have a good time at the theatrical release.”

Ahead of the new TV animation series’ October launch, the theatrical premiere of Dan Da Dan: First Encounter kicks off August 31 with screenings in Asia, September 7 in Europe, and September 31 in North America, followed by a global rollout to over 50 countries and regions, including Latin America, Australia, New Zealand, and Africa. More information from regional theatrical partners is coming regarding scheduled releases in cities including New York, Los Angeles, Paris, Taipei, Hong Kong, Manila, Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, and Bangkok.

Dan Da Dan is a truly wonderful anime born from the combination of fantastic original work and the dedication of a talented creative team,” added Mainichi Broadcasting System, Inc. producer Hiroshi Kamei. “We are thrilled to be able to bring this work to you a little earlier through this special theatrical release, thanks to the cooperation of many supporters. We are confident that you will enjoy it. Look forward to it!”

An ode to genre film, B-movies, and retro sci-fi works, Dan Da Dan follows the story of a high school girl named Momo, who is from a family of spirit mediums, and Oka run, a high school boy who is an occult freak. As the two compete to disprove the existence of the other’s passion, they are caught up in an encounter of both the spiritual and paranormal, imbuing both teenagers with unbelievable powers.
