Unity Unveils New Unity Wētā Tools Division at SIGGRAPH 2023

Leading platform for real-time 3D (RT3D) content and experience creation will showcase groundbreaking work in character creation, environment building, rendering, and compositing; live keynote today from August 7 2pm - 3pm PDT.

Unity, a leading platform for creating and growing real-time 3D (RT3D) content and experiences, will demonstrate its vision for reshaping the digital entertainment landscape at SIGGRAPH 2023. Unity’s new Unity Wētā Tools division delivers solutions for artists to collaborate and create 2D and 3D content. It will showcase the latest advancements designed to make high-end VFX production and premium content creation accessible to creators. The platform empowers creators to build digital worlds, brings hyper-realistic characters to life, and elevates film production techniques. These solution represent the first productized set of production tools to come from Unity's purchase of the legendary Wētā Digital's proprietary VFX production technology and pipeline finalized at the end of 2021. That technology was engineered and refined over many years in the production of some of the industry's most successful film and TV projects including, among countless others, the Oscar-winning Avatar: The Way of Water.

At SIGGRAPH 2023, Unity Wētā Tools will present a keynote on August 7 from 2:00 – 3:00 PM PDT reaffirming its mission of expanding digital production boundaries and fostering innovation and creativity by providing creators with versatile and powerful tools. Presenters, including Unity’s Allan Poore and Natalya Tatarchuk, Steve May from Pixar, and Joe Letteri of WētāFX, will share how Unity Wētā Tools are currently being used in award-winning films to accelerate creative workflows to implement creative changes more easily and to produce higher-quality final shots.

The Unity Wētā Tools demonstration will illustrate the latest character tools to match creative briefs in any film, animation, or game design language. The latest digital human, Samir, and stylized creature, Nova, run in real-time and demonstrate biomechanics as part of their performances. See the latest collaborative tools, such as SyncSketch, which facilitates collaboration and provides real-time and async feedback for faster iteration. In addition, the introduction of Unity Wētā Tools’ Deep Compositing and Eddy promises to redefine post-production workflows, enabling creators to achieve unprecedented depth and detail in their productions.

"Our focus has always been on helping filmmakers, and part of that process is extending what is possible in visual effects," Wētā FX Senior VFX Supervisor and Academy Award-winner Joe Letteri said. "Deep compositing, Wig, and the integrated solver framework for Loki are all examples of how we took our experience with some of the largest and most complex projects and embedded the knowledge we acquired into the tools themselves."
