Toby Haynes to Helm ‘Star Trek’ Prequel at Paramount

J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot will produce the origin film set decades before his 2009 franchise offering, with a screenplay by Seth Grahame-Smith.

This franchise will live long and prosper! Another Star Trek installment is headed to the big screen, this time a prequel from J.J. Abrams, set decades before the 2009 film which began the current Star Trek universe. According to Variety, Toby Haynes (Andor) is set to direct from a script by Seth Grahame-Smith. Plot details for the origin story have not yet been revealed.

Star Trek Beyond (2016), the last Trek film to premiere in theaters, starred Chris Pine as Captain Kirk alongside Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldaña, John Cho and the late Anton Yelchin. A fourth installment, which will serve as the final chapter from the series of films, is also in development with Paramount.

While the theatrical side of the franchise has been on pause, multiple TV and streaming series have flourished, including the Paramount+ offerings Strange New Worlds, Discovery, and Picard, as well as the animated Lower Decks, and Prodigy.

Abrams’ Bad Robot will produce the prequel film for Paramount.
