Depp, the notorious Captain Jack Sparrow, was booted from the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise following damning accusations from his ex-wife Amber Heard – he later won a large settlement in a defamation suit brought against her over her claims. Robbie was then given the lead on a Pirates reboot, which she recently claimed had been axed.
Now, not only is prolific producer Jerry Bruckheimer refuting the reboot is dead, rumors are swirling that Depp is back in the crow’s nest. In an interview with Collider, Bruckheimer revealed that while the reboot is still in the works, a different story will be prioritized over Robbie’s female-lead feature. “I think that that script will come forward at a certain point. We developed two different stories for Pirates and the other one’s going forward first, so that’s what we’re working on, to try to get that one made." Perhaps Robbie will still make her debut, but at a later date?
While shaky at best, UK tabloid The Sun reports that Depp will make his comeback in Bruckheimer’s mysterious Pirates script, a spinoff with the working title A Day At The Sea. This is completely unproven, so take that scoop with a grain of sea salt. Considering Depp once said he would only rejoin the franchise for, “$300 million and a million alpacas,” the pot must have been very sweet for him to accept the role.
