Margot Robbie Joining ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ Reboot

While the return of Captain Jack Sparrow is yet unknown, the ‘Suicide Squad’ star confirms there will be ‘lots of girl power’ in the hit Disney swashbuckling franchise reboot… or spinoff?

Harley Quinn is hitting the high seas! In the midst of speculation as to whether or not Johnny Depp will reprise his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in Disney’s upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean 6, a surprising new casting rumor has been confirmed. Suicide Squad and Birds of Prey star Margot Robbie sat down with Yahoo and revealed that the upcoming Pirates film will have “lots of girl power,” adding “I’m not a producer on Pirates, so I’ll sit back and kind of wait for the process. We’re really, really excited at the prospect of adding obviously a very key female element to that world.” It sounds like Robbie will be the lead, or maybe even Jack’s replacement. Amping up the “girl power,” Christina Hodson (Birds of Prey) is attached to pen the script.

The newest film promises to reboot, rather than continue, the popular hit franchise. It seems that Disney is continuing its recent “remake with a female lead” trend, and not even the films based on Disneyland rides with firmly established lore are safe. Does Pirates need a reboot? No. Will it make lots of money? Yes. Is Margot Robbie going to make one hell of a pirate? Absolutely.

Confusingly, it seems that there may also be another Pirates film in circulation written by Craig Mazin (Chernobyl) and Ted Elliot (Pirates 1-4). This would also be a reboot, but if this information is true, Robbie’s film could act more as a spinoff in the same universe rather than the “main” film. What would you prefer? Two separate films, or a complete reboot with female leads? And do we need to separate Pirates storylines?
