GKIDS Drops Miyazaki’s ‘The Boy and the Heron’ Teaser

December North American release set for the highly anticipated new - and last - Studio Ghibli film from the famed Academy Award-winning director; premieres internationally tomorrow at the 48th Toronto International Film Festival.

GKIDS has shared a teaser trailer and North America released date for The Boy and The Heron, the highly anticipated new - and last - film from Academy Award-winning Hayao Miyazaki, co-founder of Japan’s celebrated animation house Studio Ghibli. The feature, from Japan’s celebrated animation house, begins special preview engagements November 22 before rolling out in the U.S. and Canada December 8. The film will be screened its original Japanese with English subtitles as well as a new English version.

The film makes its international premiere tomorrow, September 7, at the 48th Toronto International Film Festival as the Opening Night Gala. Tickets to all TIFF screenings sold out in record time – however, this fall, the film makes its U.S. premiere at the New York Film Festival, its European premiere as the Opening Night of San Sebastian International Film Festival, and its U.K. premiere at the BFI London Film Festival.

The hand-drawn, animated feature – director Miyazaki’s first feature film in 10 years – features an original story written and directed by Miyazaki, produced by co-founder Toshio Suzuki, with a musical score from Miyazaki’s long-time collaborator Joe Hisaishi. Its theme song, “Spinning Globe,” was penned and performed by global J-pop superstar Kenshi Yonezu.

Studio Ghibli recently released the following description of The Boy And The Heron:

A young boy named Mahito
yearning for his mother
ventures into a world shared by the living and the dead.

There, death comes to an end,
and life finds a new beginning.

A semi-autobiographical fantasy
about life, death, and creation,
in tribute to friendship,
from the mind of Hayao Miyazaki.
