First Images Revealed for Miyazaki’s ‘The Boy and the Heron’

The highly anticipated new - and last - Studio Ghibli film from the famed Academy Award-winning director hit Japanese theaters last month and will open in North America later this year.

A sneak peek at The Boy and The Heron, the highly anticipated new - and last - film from Academy Award-winning Hayao Miyazaki, co-founder of Japan’s celebrated animation house Studio Ghibli, is finally here! Released exclusively in Japan as Kimitachi wa Do Ikiruka (translated as How Do You Live), the film has been shrouded in mystery with absolutely no images, trailers, synopses, advertisements, or other information.

Now, fans can finally get a glimpse at the flick after a booklet containing screenshots was given to Japanese theatrical audiences. The images confirm the film was created in the classic hand drawn Ghibli animation style, rather than the 3D style used for Earwig and the Witch.

Check out the exciting booklet, as revealed on the Catsuka Twitter account on August 10:

Official stills have also been dropped on the DiscussingFilm Twitter account:

The Boy and The Heron is an original story directed by Miyazaki and produced by Oscar-winning Studio Ghibli co-founder Toshio Suzuki. It features a musical score from Miyazaki’s long-time collaborator Joe Hisaishi.

Now that distribution rights were acquired by GKIDS last month, the film will hit North American theaters later this year.
