Digital Domain Launches Masquerade3 Markerless Facial Mocap System

The company’s innovative technology promises faster results with reduced integration and per-shot rigging costs.

VFX technology and production leader Digital Domain has announced the launch of Masquerade3, its latest advancement in facial motion-capture systems. Building on Masquerade 2.0, which brought intricacies of human facial dynamics to digital characters, the update’s innovative technology eliminates the need for markers on performers' faces.

The scalable and versatile facial motion-capture solution accommodates a range of projects with reduced integration and per-shot rigging costs. Digital Domain notes that faster capture-to-reconstruction times promise to achieve results more quickly and streamline workflows.

Its enhanced stability reduces the need for manual iterations and yields reliable results straight out of the box. The integrated gaze estimation aims to reduce labor costs in animation and processing, providing an efficient solution for reconstructing whole performances.

Digital Domain CEO Daniel Seah describes Masquerade3 as “not just adaptable, but a revolutionary advancement in motion-capture technology. The markerless capture feature, enhanced stability, and unmatched flexibility make it easier for filmmakers to bring their creative visions to life with more efficiency and effectiveness than ever before.”
