Derek Simonds Boards ‘Battlestar Galactica’ Reboot as Showrunner and Writer

‘The Sinner’ creator will also executive produce alongside Sam Esmail for UCP and Chad Hamilton; Michael Lesslie was previously attached to write and executive produce.

So say we all! Peacock’s long-awaited Battlestar Galactica reboot has added Derek Simonds (The Sinner) as its new writer, executive producer and showrunner, according to Deadline. Michael Lesslie was originally attached to write and executive produce. Executive producer Sam Esmail remains on the project.

“We are working on it,” Esmail told Deadline in October. “And in fact, I just read a great outline and it’s in great shape. Because the strike is over now – at least the WGA strike is over – we’re back into developing it.”

The original Battlestar followed the last surviving humans of an ongoing war with the dastardly robot race, The Cylons, as they searched for the promise of a better life on the mythical planet Earth. The series first ran on ABC in 1978-1979 and starred Richard Hatch, Dirk Benedict, and Lorne Greene. The more successful 2004-2009 revival starred Edward James Olmos, Mary McDonnell, Katee Sackoff and Grace Park, and was followed by the prequel Caprica.

Esmail executive produces through Esmail Corp and Universal Cable Productions (UCP), alongside Simonds and Chad Hamilton.
