Is ‘Constantine 2’ Still in Development?

Everyone’s favorite demonologist may yet return in a feature film sequel to the 2005 cult-favorite supernatural action thriller, with Keanu Reeves reprising the iconic role.

Everyone’s favorite demonologist is coming back to exorcise some major evil butt! At least, that’s what we thought until the WGA strike began earlier this year, which stopped production on the film sequel to Constantine dead in its tracks. Now that the writer’s union has come to an agreement with the AMPTP and ended the 148-day strike, many hope development will continue on the project that was set to star Keanu Reeves reprising his iconic role under the leadership of original director Francis Lawrence (Hunger Games).

Thankfully, the director has come forward with a promising update. In an interview with Gamespot, Lawrence stated, "So Constantine 2 got obviously held up by the writers' strike. And we had to jump through a bunch of hurdles to get control of the character again, because other people had control of the Vertigo stuff. We have control."

Lawrence continued, "Keanu and Akiva Goldsman and I have been in meetings and have been hashing out what we think the story is going to be, and there's more meetings of those that have to happen - the script has to be written - but really hoping that we get to do Constantine 2, and make a real rated R version of it." An R-rated, demon-ass-kicking Hellraiser? Count us in!

Based on the original character from DC comics, John Constantine is an exorcist and expert demonologist caught in the age-old battle between good and evil. While noble, his diligence in demon killing is also selfishly fueled by his vendetta to end up in heaven. After all, “What would you do if you were sentenced to a prison where half the inmates were put there by you?”

Not much is known in the way of plot, but it may be assumed that events will be at least loosely based on content from the comics. Akiva Goldsman is set to write and produce under his Weed Road Pictures banner, alongside Bad Robot’s J.J. Abrams and Hannah Minghella.

No word yet on who will handle the devilish VFX. If the long-gestating project finally finds its legs, who else would you like to see reprising their role from the 2005 Constantine film?
