StudioNX and Toon City Vancouver Team Up on ‘Virtual Realiteens’

The new kids’ 2D animated sci-fi comedy adventure follows an ‘awesomely uncool teen and his oddball crew with videogame superpowers.’

StudioNX has teamed up with Toon City Vancouver on a new 2D animated sci-fi comedy adventure, Virtual Realiteens, which follows an “awesomely uncool teen and his oddball crew who gain videogame superpowers and who must defend their school from a treasure trove of sinister 8-bit aliens and monsters.”

The series (26x22), which targets kids ages 8-12, is based on a concept from Emmy Award-winning creators Adam Jeffcoat, Jim Bryson, and Matt Lyon. Toon City Vancouver co-founder Trevor Bentley will present the show at Kidscreen Summit 2024 in San Diego.

“We wanted to explore a story about an obnoxious new kid that truly believes he is a legend, yet the whole school seems to disagree,” said Jeffcoat. “How would he prove himself once and for all? Well, if it was the 1980s, he would do something outlandish, like turning himself into a real-life video game superhero with the help of some tech-savvy misfits. That felt like a great premise for an animated comedy.”

“When Adam and Jim pitched me Realiteens I immediately wanted to be involved,” added Bentley. “I can’t think of a better medium for mixing 1980s science fiction with over-the-top, eye-watering comedy than hand-drawn animation. Combining low-fi visuals, razor-sharp comedic cuts, and loads of keytar. This is a world I want to explore!”

Kidscreen Summit runs February 4-7, 2024, in San Diego.
