SIGGRAPH Computer Animation Festival Winner ‘Hybrids’ Now Online!

CG-animated short film from MoPA students Florian Brauch, Kim Tailhades, Matthieu Pujol, Yohan Thireau and Romain Thirion won the Best In Show award at the 2018 SIGGRAPH Computer Animation Festival.

Award-winning CG-animated short film Hybrids, directed by MoPA students Florian Brauch, Kim Tailhades, Matthieu Pujol, Yohan Thireau and Romain Thirion, is now available to watch online as a Vimeo Staff Pick!

Named best in show at the 2018 SIGGRAPH Computer Animation Festival, Hybrids has an ecological bent inspired by garbage found in ocean, with the filmmakers wondering how nature could use the pollution to enhance its defenses.

The six-minute short, which was selected to screen at this year’s Annecy International Animated Film Festival, has won more than 20 awards to date, including top honors at Stiges, Stuttgart and Colcoa, and a VES Award for outstanding effects in a student project.

The incredibly detailed and photo-realistic creatures that populate Hybrids were created using Pixologic ZBrush and Autodesk Maya for modeling, with textures applied using Allegorithmic’s Substance Painter. Crowd simulation software Golaem was employed for crowd sequences along with SideFX’s Houdini for visual effects and Foundry Nuke for compositing. Rendering was completed using Arnold for Maya.
