SIGGRAPH Asia 2023 CAF Winners Announced

‘Moirai - Thread of Life’ takes Best in Show with Jury's Special Award going to ‘Hair Universe;’ winners among 38 films selected to screen at this year’s Electronic and Animation Theaters. 

SIGGRAPH Asia 2023 Computer Animation Festival (CAF) has announced the winners of this year’s competition. The event received 382 submissions from 595 artists representing 14 countries, with 38 films, including works from the inaugural Junior Competition participants, selected to screen at this year’s Electronic and Animation Theaters.

The conference runs December 12-15, with exhibitions running December 13-15. Register here.

“As an educator and co-chair of the Computer Animation Festival, I am thrilled to witness the remarkable diversity of creativity and the expansive technical prowess showcased at the SIGGRAPH Asia 2023 Computer Animation Festival,” said CAF co-chair and Griffith Film School director Herman Van Eyken. “It's particularly gratifying to see global talent being showcased right here in Australia, which is a major player on the international stage. The awarded works not only stand at the forefront of animation but also serve as a testament to the richness of storytelling in the digital landscape.”

Best in Show:                   

  • Moirai - Thread of Life – Ina Conradi and Mark Chavez, directors; Conradi, producer (Nanyang Technological University, School of Art)

Jury's Special Award:     

  • Hair Universe – Jinuk Choi, director/producer (Kotory Studio)

Best Student Project:    

  • Thaba Ye –Preetam Dhar, Daria Batueva, Hannah Judd, Mogau Kekana, Merel Hamers, and Leroy Le Roux, directors; Cécile Blondel, producer (Gobelins l'école de l’image)

Honorable Mentions:    

  • Quem Salva – Laure Devin, Maxime Bourstin, Nathan Medam, Charles Hechinger, and Titouan Jaouen, directors; Philippe Meis, producer (Supinfocom Rubika)
  • Loup y es-tu ? ­- Louise Laurent, Alizée Van De Valle, Emma Fessart, Jeanne Galland, Célina Lebon, and Annouck Françoise, directors/producers (Supinfocom Rubika)

The 2023 SIGGRAPH Junior Animation Festival Competition recognizes and nurtures the future animators of the world. It was designed to foster emerging talent in computer graphics and animation.

Participants were encouraged to share their entries with classmates, team members, and colleagues, further promoting a spirit of community and collaboration within the animation industry.

Honorable Mention:      

  • Coil Motors – Electro P200D – Nathan Fereig, director     

Water and The Star Keeper will be screened in the Electronic Theater, and Inspiration and Coil Motors – Electro P200D will be screened in the Animation Theater.
