Netflix Acquires Streaming Rights for ‘The Boy and the Heron’

Streamer inks multiyear deal for rights to the Oscar-winning film, along with 22 other Studio Ghibli films, outside the U.S. and Japan, including Oscar-winning and -nominated films ‘Spirited Away,’ ‘Princess Mononoke,’ ‘Arrietty,’ ‘Kiki’s Delivery Service,’ ‘My Neighbor Totoro,’ and ‘The Tale of The Princess Kaguya.’

Netflix will soon be the official home for Hayao Miyazaki’s Oscar Award-winning film The Boy and the Heron for all countries outside the U.S. and Japan, along with 22 other Studio Ghibli films, including Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Arrietty, Kiki’s Delivery Service, My Neighbor Totoro, and The Tale of The Princess Kaguya. The titles will stream on Netflix in Asia Pacific, Europe, Middle East, Africa and Latin America later this year.

Max recently penned a multiyear agreement with GKIDS to extend its exclusive U.S. film streaming rights to the Japanese studio’s catalog. Max has been the U.S. home for the studio’s film library since 2020; the original deal marked the first time these titles were available to stream.

As part of the extension, Max will become home to The Boy and the Heron in the U.S. market, with a streaming debut date announcement coming later this year. The hand-drawn, original story is written and directed by the Academy Award-winning Miyazaki, his first feature film in 10 years. Produced by Studio Ghibli co-founder Toshio Suzuki, the film features a musical score from Miyazaki’s long-time collaborator Joe Hisaishi.
