After its world premiere at the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival, the film screened at over 90 film festivals worldwide, winning over 20 awards including the Grand Prix at Animafest Zagreb.

My Love Affair With Marriage, a story of a spirited young woman determined to find love in the bewildering world, will have its U.S. theatrical release at The Quad in New York on October 6, and at Laemmle Glendale in Los Angeles on October 13 (with a preview screening on October 12 at the Laemmle Royal). Other cities will follow.

Baumane, the film’s writer and director, spoke to AWN about her plans to travel with the film, saying, “From LA the film will go to movie theaters around the country. Again, I will travel with the film to meet audiences, answer questions, and hopefully incite conversations.”

My Love Affair With Marriage follows Zelma on her 23-year quest for perfect love and lasting marriage, set against a backdrop of historic events in Eastern Europe. Told from a woman’s point of view, the film blends historical, biological, societal, and emotional arcs with a lively sense of humor and musical numbers. This animated film for adults tackles the issues of love, gender norms, domestic violence, fantasies, and toxic relationships to propel a woman's journey toward independence and liberation.

Given the personal subject matter of the film, Baumane shared how audiences discussed their reactions with her. “I had many fascinating conversations with women after the film’s screenings. Very often women confessed: ‘I know it is not my country or my culture, but I feel it is MY story.’”

“What surprised me the most was that a lot of men also related to the main character Zelma,” she added. “‘Like Zelma, I am different, and people often reject me, too, because I am different.’ I am happy that the film has universal appeal.

“I am also thrilled that the film has a crossover appeal to audiences not just of animation festivals but also to live-action festivals. That is yet another proof that animation is cinema, capable to tell complex layered stories for grownup audiences.”

My Love Affair With Marriage was written and directed by Baumane; the voice cast includes Matthew Modine (Stranger Things); Dagmara Domińczyk (Succession); Michele Pawk; Cameron Monaghan (Shameless); and Stephen Lang (Avatar).
