'Loki's Gugu Mbatha-Raw to Narrate ‘To My Daughter’ Animated Short

The upcoming film adapts a chapter from the debut novel ‘This Thread of Gold’ by Catherine Joy White (Black Mirror, Ten Percent), celebrating Black women, ‘who resisted in secret through trusted networks.’

An important film for the next generation of little girls is now in production. The upcoming animated short film To My Daughter is an adaptation of a chapter from the debut novel ‘This Thread of Gold’ by Catherine Joy White (Black Mirror, Ten Percent), set to be published in 2024. The book celebrates Black women “who resisted in secret through trusted networks,” with the chapter ‘Daughter’ specifically inspired by the overturning of Roe v Wade.

White will direct the short from her own script adaptation. Helena Bonastre (61 Beehive Street) co-directs. Said White of her novel, “I started writing ‘Daughter’ fueled with rage the morning after Roe v Wade was overturned in America. It quickly became ‘To My Daughter’ – a joyful letter to the daughter I hope I will one day have; a reminder of the value and beauty of her life.”

Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Surface, Loki, Belle) will narrate the short. Said Mbatha-Raw of the project, “I was immediately captivated by the poetry of Catherine Joy White’s ‘To My Daughter.’ Her words pulse with joy, legacy and mischief and I’m proud to give a voice to them in her animated short film.”

Vanessa Wheeler produces for Lupus Films (Kensuke’s Kingdom, We’re Going on a Bear Hunt) in London.
