Live-Action ‘Lilo & Stitch’ Adds Zach Galifianakis

Disney’s upcoming hybrid live-action/CG feature, helmed by ‘Marcel the Shell with Shoes On’ director Dean Fleischer-Camp, has added ‘The Hangover’ actor in an undisclosed role.

Disney’s upcoming hybrid live-action/CG Lilo & Stitch feature film project, directed by Dean Fleischer-Camp (Marcel the Shell with Shoes On), has added comedy powerhouse Zach Galifianakis (The Hangover, Puss in Boots) in an undisclosed role, according to Variety.

Disney’s original animated feature tells the story of an unlikely familial bond formed by a lonely Hawaiian girl named Lilo and a cuddly alien named Stitch, who is genetically engineered by a mad scientist to wreak havoc in the universe. While Galifianakis is officially on board, the search for characters Lilo and Nani continues. Chris Sanders, the original voice actor for the iconic blue criminal Stitch, will reprise his role in the film.

Fleischer-Camp’s adaptation of Lilo & Stitch will mix live-action with CG -- familiar territory for the director, whose Oscar-nominated Marcel the Shell With Shoes On similarly mixes mediums. That hybrid film, which is centered on a snail who journeys through the human world, currently boasts one of the highest per-screen averages, and has grossed $273 million at the global box office.

The live-action Lilo & Stitch adaptation is being penned by Chris Kekaniokalani Bright. Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich of Rideback are producing the new movie, with Rideback’s Ryan Halprin executive producing. Pre-production is expected to begin May 10, 2024.

Lilo & Stitch will release on Disney+, although an official date is not yet set.
