Director James Gunn revealed the news on the film’s first day of shooting alongside a close-up image of the Man of Steel’s costume; the film flies into theaters July 11, 2025.
James Gunn recently took to Instagram to reveal that the title of his upcoming Superman origin film, which kicks off the new DCU’s Gods and Monsters chapter, has been changed from Superman: Legacy to simply Superman.
“Overjoyed to be announcing the start of principal photography on SUPERMAN today, February 29, which just so happens to be – coincidentally and unplanned – Superman’s birthday,” captioned Gunn.
“When I finished the first draft of the script, I called the film ‘Superman: Legacy,’” he added. “By the time I locked the final draft, it was clear the title was SUPERMAN. Making our way to you July 2025.”

The film, which follows a younger version of the Man of Steel, is helmed and penned by Gunn. David Corenswet stars as Clark Kent alongside Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Isabela Mered as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern Guy Gardner, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, and Wendell Pierce as Perry White.
DC Studios Co-CEO Peter Safran produces. No word yet on who will handle the extraterrestrial VFX.
Superman flies into theaters July 11, 2025.
