Em Cooper's Hand Painted ‘I’m Only Sleeping’ Scores ‘Best Music Video’ Grammy

The animator’s homage to the Fab Four wins the highly coveted ‘Best Music Video’ at this year’s music awards; the animated short celebrates the re-release of The Beatles’ seminal 1966 album, ‘Revolver,’ set to one of the album’s most iconic tracks.

The 2024 Grammy Awards glammed the world last night, with honors going to music/songs across all categories of music, including some of the best of last year’s visually innovative and VFX-driven films, including Barbie and Oppenheimer, as well as the popular game Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. The award for Best Music Video went to I’m Only Sleeping, the stunning and beautiful animated short by Em Cooper, who painstakingly worked with oil paint, one frame at a time, to create her magical homage to the Fab Four.

A complete list of winners is available here.

Cooper spent months researching within The Beatles’ archives, designing, storyboarding, creating a rough animatic, painting, shooting, and editing the 3-minute music video, a laborious process that eventually involved 1,300 oil paintings, exploring the space between “dreaming and wakefulness,” created in celebration of the re-release of the band’s seminal 1966 album, “Revolver.”
