Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Eugene Hansen Board ‘Minecraft’

The upcoming live-action adaptation of Mojang’s best-selling video game has yet to secure a title but is set to hit theaters on April 4, 2025; production slated to begin in New Zealand by the end of December.

Danielle Brooks (Peacemaker) and Sebastian Eugene Hansen (Mozart in the Jungle) have joined the cast of the upcoming live-action Minecraft feature adaptation, reports Deadline. Brooks will portray Dawn, while Hansen will play Henry. Production is set to pick up in New Zealand by the end of the month.

Minecraft stars Jason Momoa and is currently in development with Warner Bros. in partnership with Legendary Pictures. Jared Hess directs, although a writer has yet to be announced.

The game Minecraft, first released by Sweden’s Mojang Studios in 2011 and purchased by Microsoft for $2.5 billion in 2014, immerses players in a low-res, pixelated “sandbox” simulation where they can use blocks to build entire worlds. The thematic adaptation follows a young girl and her group of unlikely adventurers who set out to save the Overworld after a malevolent Ender Dragon sets out on a path of destruction.

Mary Parent (Dune) and Roy Lee produce. Jill Messick, adds THR, will “receiv[e] a posthumous producing credit for developing the film before her death in 2018.” Lydia Winters and Vu Bui of Mojang will also produce alongside Jon Berg, Cale Boyter, and Jon Spaihts, who serve as executive producers.

Minecraft is expected to premiere April 4, 2025.
