Ana Ofelia Murguía, the Mexican actress who voiced Mamá Coco in the 2017 Oscar-winning Pixar animated musical comedy, passed away on December 31 at the age of 90, according to Variety.
Coco, which follows a young boy on his journey through the land of the dead during Día de los Muertos, has been widely lauded for its loving representation of Mexican culture. In a social media tribute to the late actress, Mexico’s National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature stated Murguía’s “career was vital for the performing arts of Mexico.”
Murguía was born in 1933 and caught her big break on the telenovela La Tormenta. The starlet garnered over 100 acting credits over her illustrious career and was most known for her work on The Queen of the Night (1995), Mi Querido Tom Mix (1992), and Life Sentence (1979).
José José: El Príncipe de la Canción (2018) was Murguía’s last project. She was awarded the Golden Ariel special lifetime achievement award in 2011, honoring the best of Mexican cinema.
