Chinese Animated Film ‘Deep Sea’ Sets North American Cinema Release

After playing throughout the international festival circuit this year, the innovative 3DCG film, directed by Tian Xiaopeng, will hit theaters November 24.

After playing throughout the international festival circuit this year, the Chinese 3DCG film Deep Sea will hit North American theaters later this week. The rights were acquired by Vivi Films, which has set a November 24 release with Chinese and English-dubbed versions.

The film tells the story of Shenxiu, a girl who has felt a deep sadness since being abandoned by her mother. While on a family cruise, she falls into the sea and stumbles upon a mysterious restaurant under the waves. She meets the scheming chef Nanhe and his ragtag crew of adorable otters and sarcastic walruses. They join forces to save the restaurant and reunite Shenxiu with her long-lost mother in a kaleidoscopic, dreamlike world of swirling color and dazzling views.

“Viva Pictures is honored to join forces once more with Mr. Tian Xiaopeng following our successful release of his movie, Monkey King: Hero Is Back, in 2015,” said Victor Elizalde, president of Viva Pictures. “Deep Sea represents a pivotal juncture at Viva, as we embrace a renewed commitment to championing cinematic artistry characterized by breathtaking visuals and enthralling story telling. Deep Sea is a truly unique cinematic experience that belongs on the big screen, continuing our ongoing dedication to theatrical releases.”

Tian Xiaopeng (Monkey King: Hero is Back) directs the innovative film, which utilizes a CG technique developed by the production team that creates 3D images from ink paintings based around particles. YI Qiao (Nezha) produces through October Pictures and Coloroom. The film’s budget is reported at $80 million.

Deep Sea is also licensed for release in France (through distributor KMBO), Italy (Lucky Red), Germany (Leonine Studios), Turkey, UAE (Sky Entertainment), and Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia (Aike Limited).

Deep Sea swims into North American theaters November 24.
