Chernin, King Features to Develop ‘Popeye the Sailor Man’ Live-Action Feature

Producers are in the process of attaching a studio partner for the latest adaptation of the iconic, spinach-loving 1920s comic book character.

Did you “eets yur spinach?” The iconic, greens-loving 1920s comic book character is headed to the big screen in a new live-action adaptation Popeye the Sailor Man from Chernin Entertainment and King Features, according to Variety.

Michael Caleo (Sexy Beast, The Family, The Sopranos) is set to pen the script, which serves as the first live-action installment since the 1980 film Popeye, starring Robin Williams and Shelley Duvall. Popeye also starred in the classic animated series, which aired 1960-1962.

The character celebrated his 95th anniversary this year, after debuting in the 1929 comic “Thimble Theater.” It is unclear whether the upcoming film will take advantage of the creative freedoms soon to be unleashed when the IP enters the public domain in 2025.

Producers are in the process of attaching a studio partner. Details on potential VFX houses have not yet been released.
