Catya Plate Brings ‘Las Nogas’ to HollyShorts

The 2023 NYC Women’s Fund Recipient, artist and filmmaker Catya Plate, brings the third short of her award-winning stop-motion animated trilogy to the festival’s monthly screening event in Los Angeles, January 31.

Brooklyn filmmaker and artist Catya Plate, named 2023 NYC Women’s Fund Recipient last April, is heading to Los Angeles to screen the third of her stop-motion shorts, part of her award-winning trilogy Las Nogas. The film will screen at the HollyShorts Monthly Screening Event on January 31 at 7:00 PM at the TLC Chinese 6 Theatres; 6925 Hollywood Boulevard, Los Angeles, California 90028. Tickets are available here.

The monthly screening event is an offshoot of the Oscar-qualifying HollyShorts Film Festival, which returns to Los Angeles August 8-17, 2024.

Since the film's July launch on the festival circuit, accolades received include the Green Planet Award at Flickers’ Rhode Island International Film Festival (World Premiere), Best Animated Film at Fano International Film Festival (Italy Premiere), and Jury Prize: Best Short at the Green Film Festival of San Francisco.

Originally from Barcelona, Spain, and raised in Germany, Plate came to New York in 1987 through a Fulbright Scholarship for post-graduate studies at the School of Visual Arts. She has exhibited internationally since the mid-1980s, with projects displayed in public and private collections such as the Brooklyn Museum and New York Public Library/Print Collection.

In 2009, Plate launched Clothespin Freak Productions to bring her “Clothespin Freaks” characters to life through stop-motion animated shorts. The company has produced four award-winning stop-motion animated shorts: The Reading (2010) and the eco-thrilling shorts trilogy Hanging by A Thread (2013), Meeting MacGuffin (2017), and Las Nogas (2023).

Plate will be joined by Misty Lee (voice of Alma) and Clarissa Jacobson (voice of Queen Bee) for a Q&A after the in-person January 31 screening.
