Cartoons on The Bay Announces Program Highlights

Award-winning director John Musker is being honored with Pulcinella Lifetime Achievement Award and retrospective; other special awards will go to Italian comic book artist Sara Pichelli and American producer, director, and writer Leslie Iwerks; the event returns to Pescara, Italy May 29-June 2.

Since 1996, Italy’s main animation and children’s entertainment industry event, Cartoons on The Bay, has been dedicated to new trends in animation, gaming, comics, children’s content, and all transmedia visual arts. This year, the festival returns once again to Itay’s picturesque coast May 29 - June 2 at ARUM in Pescara.

Cartoons on The Bay (COTB) 2024 program highlights include:

Guest Country 2024: Spain

The festival’s industry program will host events exploring Spain’s production/industry, help build and foster connections to its Italian counterpart, and help facilitate co-production agreements.

Topic of the year: Sport

Sports is a central theme for COTB 2024, with the festival promising to highlight dynamic and motivational aspects of sports as a storytelling medium while offering unique and imaginative interpretations that celebrate both athleticism and artistic expression.

Pulcinella Lifetime Achievement Award - John Musker

COTB artistic director Roberto Genovesi presents Award-winning American film director, screenwriter, and film producer John Musker with the Lifetime Achievement honor.

At the event, Musker will present the Italian premiere of his Oscar-shortlisted film I’m Hip. COTB will feature a retrospective of a renowned filmmaker, and Musker will be presenting a master class.

Sergio Bonelli Award 2024 - Sara Pichelli

Italian comic book artist Sara Pichelli will be honored with the Sergio Bonelli Award. A Marvel artist since 2008, Pichelli has worked on high-profile titles such as X-Men, GOTG, and Spider-Man. She is also attached to the success of the character Miles Morales, co-created with screenwriter Brian M. Bendis in 2012.

Pulcinella Special Award 2024 - Leslie Iwerks

American producer, director, and writer Leslie Iwerks will be this year’s Pulcinella Special Award honoree. Iwerks has directed and produced documentaries and short films such as Oscar-nominated Recycled Life and the Primetime Emmy Award-winning The Pixar Story. Her more recent accomplishments include the documentary 100 Years of Warner Bros.
