‘Babylon 5’ Animated Film in Development at Warner Bros.

The upcoming project, based on one of the best sci-fi franchises of all time, comes from Warner Bros. Animation & WB Home Entertainment with original series creator J. Michael Straczynski attached.

Babylon 5 is getting the animation treatment at Warner Bros. with the original series creator J. Michael Straczynski (Sense8, World War Z) attached.

“BABYLON 5 ANIMATED MOVIE [sic] coming from Warner Bros. Animation & WB Home Entertainment!” Straczynski exclaimed on Twitter alongside a picture of the script. “Classic B5: raucous, heartfelt, nonstop, a ton of fun through time and space & a love letter to the fans. Movie title, release date and other details coming one week from today.”

The iconic sci-fi franchise, widely considered one of the best sci-fi series by critics, was originally produced by Warner Bros. Television and consisted of five seasons and seven TV movies. The series won numerous awards, including two Hugo Awards and a Saturn Award.

The show took place on the space station Babylon 5, a port for all sorts in “neutral space” during a time of unease and a constantly looming threat of war. The franchise spurred multiple forms of content, including The TNT spinoff series Crusade as well as novels, short stories, and comic books. A CW reboot series was announced in 2021, but the trail has gone cold on the project.

In a promising Twitter update, Straczynski assured fans the film is “already finished and in the can” and that “it feels the most B5-ish of anything we’ve done since the original show.” Here’s hoping we get a sneak peek at the animation style soon!
