Amazon MGM Studios Developing ‘Poltergeist’ Series

Set in the world of the beloved 1982 cult classic, the upcoming show will be executive produced by Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey for Amblin Television.

A series set in the world of the horror film Poltergeist is in early development at Amazon MGM Studios, Variety reports.

The original Poltergeist follows the Freeling family as they move into a haunted home and must work to free their kidnapped daughter from evil spirits. Plot details have not yet been revealed for the upcoming series.

The original 1982 film proved itself a beloved cult classic, earning $121 million worldwide against a reported budget of only $10.7 million. The film was nominated for best visual effects, best sound effects editing, and best original score at the Academy Awards, an uncommon honor for the horror genre. Poltergeist was followed by two sequels in 1986 and 1988, and it was rebooted in 2015.

The upcoming series will be the second in the franchise, following Showtime’s Poltergeist: The Legacy, which ran for four seasons and ended in 1999.

While no writer or director is currently attached to the project, Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey will executive produce for Amblin Television.

*** Editor's Note - correction - Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey were incorrectly listed as the original film's producers.
