Director Naoko Yamada’s ‘A Silent Voice,’ a coming-of-age drama that depicts the struggles of adolescence, returns to theaters in the U.S. nationwide on December 15.
GKIDS has acquired the North American distribution rights for A Silent Voice (2016) and Liz and the Blue Bird (2018). A Silent Voice will return to U.S. theaters nationwide on December 15 and 16. Tickets for screenings are on sale now.
Both films are produced by animation studio Kyoto Animation, directed by Naoko Yamada (The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Lucky Star), penned by Reiko Yoshida (Ride Your Wave, Violet Evergarden), and feature music by Kensuke Ushio (DEVILMAN crybaby, Chainsaw Man). A Silent Voice received a nomination for the Japan Academy Prize for Animation of the Year.
In A Silent Voice, popular boy Shoya Ishida becomes an outcast after bullying a deaf girl. Alone and depressed, the regretful Shoya finds her to make amends.
In Liz and the Blue Bird, a friendship buckles under the pressure of high school graduation and musical duet. Interspersed with the story is a fantasy tale, drawn like a storybook, contrasting with the crisp realism of the school.
GKIDS also recently acquired the rights to Yamada’s short film, The Garden of Remembrance.
